Six subdivisions were laid out here for African American buyers between 1900 and 1923, just across the District line, and the town incorporated in 1935. The district takes in the 1908 town hall and the county's first public school for Black children, opened in 1912, along with five churches and a community centre that carried the local political organising through segregation.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
