Conant Gardens, the subdivision an abolitionist's will left open to Black buyers

The land here belonged to Shubael Conant, who founded the Detroit Anti-Slavery Society in 1837 and refused to let it pass to developers who would write racial restrictions into the deeds. With no covenants to bar them, Black families began buying and building here from about 1928, at a time when most of the city was closed to them. By 1950 Conant Gardens had the highest median income of any Black neighbourhood in Detroit.
