Roosevelt seizes the Kearny shipyard
1941

Federal Shipbuilding, a United States Steel subsidiary at the point where the Hackensack meets Newark Bay, built more destroyers than any American yard except Bath Iron Works. In August 1941 about 16,000 workers walked out over a maintenance of membership clause, halting 493 million dollars of Navy and merchant contracts four months before Pearl Harbor. The company president told the government it could have the yard rather than sign, and on 23 August President Roosevelt ordered the Navy to take it over, the first seizure of its kind in the defence build up. At its wartime peak the yard employed around 35,000 people.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
