Roosevelt Field, a mall built on Lindbergh's runway
1956

The airfield closed in 1951 and the county decided the next use for that stretch of open plain was retail. Ground broke in 1955 on a 35 million dollar centre laid out by I. M. Pei around parking rather than a street, and it opened in December 1956 as the largest shopping mall in North America. It was roofed and air conditioned in 1967 and 1968, and it is still the largest mall on Long Island.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
