Lindbergh lifts off from Roosevelt Field

He took off from a muddy runway here before dawn on 20 May, so heavily loaded with fuel that the plane cleared the telephone wires at the far end by feet, and landed in Paris thirty-three and a half hours later. The airfield that launched him is a shopping mall now, one of the largest in the country, with a small plaque.
