The Camden Sears store, built with its own parking lot
1927
Camden, New Jersey
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
South Jersey's first freestanding department store opened here in 1927, and it was among the first anywhere designed around a parking lot rather than a streetcar stop. That decision is the whole logic of the shopping mall, arriving decades early. Sears left in 1971 for the Moorestown Mall. The building later held a nightclub, a car dealership and a day care before sitting empty.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
