Rochdale Village, the largest housing co-op in the world
1963
South Jamaica, Queens, New York
Rochdale Village opened on the old Jamaica Race Course in 1963 as the largest housing cooperative anywhere, taking in roughly 6,000 moderate income families over two years. The United Housing Foundation built it as a deliberately integrated development in a part of Queens that was already mostly Black, and civil rights pickets hit the construction site in 1963 over who was getting hired to build it. For a few years it was held up as the rare large scale integration that held. White residents left through the 1970s.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
