Codornices Village, the wartime housing Albany fought to keep out

The federal government put 1,896 temporary units on 120 acres straddling the Berkeley and Albany line in 1943, for shipyard workers pouring into the East Bay. Albany's council objected that the project would bring an undesirable element and integrate its schools, and was overruled. Roughly half the residents were Black, and because it was run federally rather than by a city it went further toward integration than most Bay Area wartime housing. The university took the land back and it is student family housing today.
