Mooncrest, the wartime housing built to last and integrated from the start

The federal government put 396 apartments on this bluff in 1943 for workers at the Dravo yards on Neville Island, who were turning out armour plate, munitions and landing ships. Most wartime housing was thrown up to be scrapped afterwards. Mooncrest was built in brick to stay, and it was racially integrated both during the war and after the units were sold off, which made it one of the few places in the county where Black families could buy.
