The borough was named for Thomas Rankin, a local landowner, and sits on a shelf of ground between the river and the hill eight miles from Pittsburgh. Early in the twentieth century it specialised in steel and wire goods, and its population climbed from 3,775 in 1900 to 7,470 in 1940. By the 2020 census 1,896 people were left.
