Rancho San Mateo, the last-minute land grant that became three cities
1846
San Mateo, California
Governor Pio Pico handed out this 6,439 acre grant in 1846 to Cayetano Arenas, weeks before Mexican rule on the coast ended, and Arenas sold it the same year to the Yerba Buena merchant William Davis Merry Howard. The tract ran from the Santa Cruz Mountains foothills down to the bay. Half of modern San Mateo, all of Burlingame and most of Hillsborough sit inside its old lines.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
