Charles Pratt made his fortune at Astral Oil and then inside Standard Oil, and opened a trade school in Clinton Hill in October 1887 with twelve students and fees of four dollars a class. Its library, opened in 1896 with Tiffany interiors, was the first free public library in Brooklyn and stayed the only one for about fifteen years. The campus still lights itself from an 1887 steam plant in East Hall, the oldest privately owned generating station in continuous use in the country.
