El Segundo is named for a refinery
1911
El Segundo, California

Standard Oil put its second California refinery on the dunes south of Ballona Creek in 1911, and the company town that formed around it took the refinery's number for a name. The first whistle blew that August, six months after ground was broken. Oil still occupies roughly a quarter of the city's land, with aerospace on most of the rest.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
