1901

Nine months after Spindletop, a well north of town came in and started Louisiana's oil industry. It is the reason the state has both the money and the coast it has, the canals cut for drilling and pipelines let salt water into the marsh, and are a major cause of the land loss now measured in a football field an hour.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
