Point Richmond, the town the Santa Fe Railway built
1900
Richmond, California

Augustin Macdonald noticed the deep water off this point while duck hunting and sold the Santa Fe Railway on making it the western end of its transcontinental line. The first train from Chicago arrived in 1900 and passengers changed there to ferries for San Francisco. The railway shops came in 1901 and Standard Oil's refinery followed, turning empty shoreline into an industrial city. This grid of streets was Richmond's original downtown and has been a National Register district since 1979.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
