Markham is named for the railroad president whose yard sat next door

The Illinois Central authorised a large classification yard between Harvey and Homewood in 1917, held the work up through the war and finished it in 1926, naming it for Charles H. Markham, who had taken over as the railroad's president in 1911. The village incorporated alongside it in 1925 with fewer than 300 residents and took the same name. Markham, Texas carries his name too.
