Lou Bellamy was running cultural arts at the Hallie Q. Brown Community Center when he started a Black theatre company in its auditorium in 1976. August Wilson came to Saint Paul at the invitation of director Claude Purdy and spent years attached to the company, workshopping the plays that became his ten play cycle. Penumbra premiered more of his work than any theatre outside Yale, and it is still in the same building on Selby Avenue.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
