Detroit Repertory Theatre casts Black and white actors together in 1957
1957
Woodrow Wilson Street, Detroit
Bruce Millan started the company in 1957 as a children's touring show and wrote its first play with an interracial cast, at a point when Detroit schoolchildren had not seen that on a stage. It settled into a 194 seat house on Woodrow Wilson in the 1960s, stayed open through 1967 and after, and is now the longest running professional non profit theatre in Michigan. Actors Equity did not formally recognise nontraditional casting until the 1980s.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
