Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the parish that made Belmont Italian
1906
Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 627 East 187th Street, Belmont, Bronx, New York
The first Mass was said in a storefront on East 187th Street in June 1906, for Italian families who had come up from Lower Manhattan, many of them to work on the zoo and the botanical garden going up nearby. The parish became the anchor of the neighbourhood now called Belmont, three blocks south of Fordham. The markets and bakeries of Arthur Avenue grew up around it.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
