St. Lucy's Church and the Feast of St. Gerard

St. Lucy's was founded in 1891 for the Italians of Newark's old First Ward, and in October 1899 the parish carried a framed portrait of Gerard Maiella through the streets because the statue had not yet arrived from Italy. It came the following year and the feast has been held every October since, which makes it one of the longest running Italian street feasts in the country. The church holds the national shrine to the saint, who is invoked by mothers and expectant mothers.
