Most Holy Redeemer, once the biggest Catholic parish in the country
1923
Detroit, Michigan
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
A Redemptorist priest who had served as a chaplain in the Confederate army founded this parish in 1880 for Irish immigrants working the tobacco factories. The present Renaissance Revival church at Junction and West Vernor went up between 1921 and 1923. By the 1940s the parish counted more than 14,000 members and ran fourteen Masses a Sunday across the main church, a basement church for children and a chapel on Jefferson. It has said Mass in Spanish since 1969 and is now the largest Latino parish in Detroit.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
