The chapel grew out of a sermon the Reverend W. Herbert Burk preached in 1904, and it works as two things at once: a national memorial to Washington and an active Episcopal parish inside a national park. Milton B. Medary designed the building, and its stained glass, ironwork, carving and mosaics were made by some of the best American craftsmen of the early twentieth century. It was added to the National Register in May 2017.
