Oakwood was the only part of Venice where Black families could buy

Abbot Kinney hired Black workers to dig and run his Venice of America resort, and restrictive covenants then confined them to a few blocks inland from the boardwalk. By the 1920s that pocket north of Electric Avenue was the only ground in Venice where a Black family could hold title, and it filled in with churches, businesses and a neighbourhood that took the name Oakwood. Kinney left his own house on the canals to his chauffeur Irvin Tabor, who could not live on the canals and had the building towed to Sixth Avenue in Oakwood instead.
