Abbot Kinney digs the canals of Venice of America
1905
Venice, Los Angeles, California
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Abbot Kinney cut a network of canals into the coastal marsh and opened his Venice of America resort on 4 July 1905, drawing tens of thousands of visitors on the first day. Venice was absorbed into Los Angeles and most of Kinney's canals were filled in for roads in 1929. Six canals in the southern tract survived because there were too few residents there to pay for paving, and the city drained and rebuilt them in a project completed in 1993.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
