Midtown, the Gary neighbourhood that held 97 percent of the city's Black population

Restrictive covenants and city ordinances kept Gary's Black and Mexican residents in this strip along Broadway south of downtown, known early on as the Patch. The 1950 census found 97 percent of the city's Black population living here, and because they were shut out of the downtown stores, Midtown grew its own retail row and its own jazz and blues scene along Broadway. The Jackson family were among its residents. The state has since designated the corridor an Indiana Main Street district, billed as the first to honour a historically Black neighbourhood.
