Francis Newlands buys 1,700 acres in secret and builds Chevy Chase

Senator Francis Newlands and William Stewart incorporated the Chevy Chase Land Company in 1890 and had agents quietly buy up more than 1,700 acres along the route they intended Connecticut Avenue to take. Newlands wrote covenants into the deeds barring Black and Jewish buyers and priced the lots to keep everyone else out, and in 1912 he called for repealing the Fifteenth Amendment. The covenants are void now. The village is the wealthiest municipality in Maryland per person and takes about a quarter of its revenue from speeding tickets.
