Hillsdale, the open-air centre built for people who arrive by car
1954
San Mateo, California
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
David Bohannon opened Hillsdale in December 1954 on a former dairy farm beside Bay Meadows, laid out as an open-air centre with wide walkways and a parking field rather than a street frontage. Its Macy's was the San Francisco store's first suburban branch, which is a fair marker of the moment the peninsula stopped shopping downtown. It was enclosed and rebuilt over later decades and still anchors the middle of San Mateo.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
