Newport, the rail yard that became the Gold Coast

Six hundred acres of Erie Railroad yards and piers sat derelict on the Jersey City waterfront after the freight business left. The LeFrak Organization took the site and started building apartment towers, offices and a shopping mall on it from the mid 1980s. It is the reason the New Jersey side of the harbour is now a wall of glass, and the reason banks moved back office floors across the river.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
