Samuel LeFrak announced the project in 1960 on forty swampy acres beside the Long Island Expressway and finished it in 1967: twenty towers of eighteen storeys holding about 5,000 apartments, built for roughly 150 million dollars with no federal mortgage insurance and no other government help. It was the largest privately financed apartment development in the world when it opened. A federal housing discrimination suit in 1972 ended the screening practices that had kept the complex overwhelmingly white, and its tenant population changed quickly afterward.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
