Monroeville got its library because a committee of residents raised the money

Maude Helen Malick started the Monroeville Citizens Committee for Library Service in 1960 because the fast growing suburb had no library at all. The committee raised 109,000 dollars locally and landed a federal grant of 21,000 more, enough to build a two storey building on the Gateway campus opposite the new high school. It opened on 3 November 1964 with just over 7,000 books, and had more than 13,500 items a year later.
