Built because no downtown hotel would take Black guests, and it became the centre of a jazz strip running forty blocks. Ellington and Armstrong stayed here. Charles Mingus and Dexter Gordon came up in the clubs, and the scene died when the covenants fell and people could finally live elsewhere.
