McKeesport and the National Tube Works, once the largest pipe mill on earth
1872
McKeesport, Pennsylvania
The Flagler brothers opened the National Tube Works at the meeting of the Monongahela and the Youghiogheny in 1872, and for a stretch afterwards McKeesport was the fastest growing city in the country. At its height the plant was the world's largest producer of steel pipe. U.S. Steel absorbed it in 1901 and the works shut in 1987. The city's population was 17,727 at the 2020 census.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
