James Sutton bought 334 acres here in 1826, and his heirs sold it off in subdivisions, one of them named Maplewood for the trees planted along its streets. An electric streetcar reached the Sutton Loop in 1896 and the population jumped. After a fire at Banner Lumber burned an entire block in early 1908, residents voted that May to incorporate, mainly to get fire protection and schools of their own.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
