Veterans of the air war in France opened Dundalk Flying Field here in 1919, the first commercial aviation ground in Maryland. At the inaugural air show on 5 July 1920, Army Lieutenant Patrick Logan crashed a war surplus Nieuport 28 and was killed, and the field was renamed for him almost immediately. It became Baltimore's first municipal airport, based the Maryland National Guard's 104th Observation Squadron from 1921, and by the 1930s ran scheduled flights to New York, Washington, Atlantic City and Miami. Charles Lindbergh, Amelia Earhart and Douglas Corrigan all landed here.
