Compton/Woodley Airport, the oldest airfield still flying in the LA basin
1924
Compton, California
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The field opened in May 1924 on land the local school board owned, after an aviator put down in it and decided it would make a good aerodrome. The lease changed hands repeatedly until Earl Woodley took it over in 1936, which is where the second half of the name comes from. It has been running ever since, longer than any other airport in the Los Angeles basin, and now works as a general aviation relief field for LAX eight miles west.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
