J. Ellwood Lee opened a Conshohocken factory in 1887 making medical supplies, and by 1900 he employed 600 people, more than anyone else in the borough. He sold that side of the business to Johnson and Johnson in 1905, moved to a new plant at Spring Mill in 1910, and opened the tire works in 1912. Lee died in 1914 but the tires kept his town's name on them until Goodyear, which had absorbed the company in 1966, closed the plant in 1978.
