Ford commissioned the Rawsonville Dam and powerhouse on the Huron in 1931 and 1932 to supply his Ypsilanti factory, one of the village industries he scattered through rural Michigan so farm families had wages through the winter. The Ypsilanti plant opened in 1932, made every starter and generator Ford used, and after a 1947 merger employed fifteen hundred people, the largest of all the village industries. The dam backed up 975 acres of river now called Ford Lake, and in 1969 Ford's company handed the dam and its land to the city and the township.
