Black families had been buying lots here since the 1880s, and in 1948 Kinloch became the first African American community incorporated in Missouri, with its own government, school board, stores, churches and theaters. From the 1980s St. Louis bought up more than a thousand Kinloch properties under a noise abatement program for Lambert airport. The population fell by over 80 percent in the 1990s alone and stood at 263 in the 2020 census.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
