Robbins incorporates as a town run entirely by Black officials

Robbins was incorporated in December 1917 and is the second oldest African American incorporated town in the North, after Brooklyn, Illinois. For years it was the only municipality in the North governed entirely by Black officials. A group of Black aviators built the country's first Black owned and operated airport here, finished in January 1933 and wrecked by a storm the same year. Nichelle Nichols, later Uhura on Star Trek, was born in the village in 1932 to a father who had been elected its mayor.
