Fairmont, the community neither city would take in
1920
Fairmont, Will County, Illinois
Fairmont was platted in the 1920s as cheap lots for people working the industries in Lockport and the east side of Joliet, and it filled with Black families arriving from the South. Sitting between two cities, it was annexed by neither, which left it without the services an incorporated town provides. It remains unincorporated and was 54 percent Black at the 2020 census.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
