Indiana University Northwest, the campus Gary sold off a park to get

Indiana University began teaching in Lake County in 1921 through the Gary public schools, and took over Gary College in 1948. In 1955 the city council sold the university twenty seven acres of Gleason Park for a permanent campus, and the first classes were held on it in 1959. The Gary and East Chicago centres were combined as the Northwest campus in 1963. Its library holds the Calumet Regional Archives, which is where much of the documentary record of the steel towns actually lives.
