Cane had been grown on the Brazos floodplain here since the 1840s, and in 1908 the local plantations were consolidated into the Imperial Sugar Company. What followed was a company town in the full sense: Imperial built the houses, the hospital, the stores and the streets, and owned nearly all of it. The town did not incorporate as a city until 1959. The refinery ran until 2003, and the Char House still stands over the site the city bought back in 2025.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
