Hollywood Burbank Airport and the fake neighbourhood painted over it
1930

United Airport opened here over Memorial Day weekend in 1930 as a direct answer to Grand Central in Glendale, and it was the largest commercial field in Los Angeles until LAX overtook it in 1946. Lockheed bought it in 1940 and renamed it Lockheed Air Terminal. During the Second World War the adjoining aircraft plant was hidden under painted burlap showing a quiet suburb from above, with hundreds of fake trees built from chicken wire and feathers and rubber cars parked on the canvas streets.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
