The city grew out of Walter Ohlert's tourist camp on the Okeechobee Road, and twenty-six voters incorporated it unanimously in December 1948. It stayed rural for two more decades, raising horses, until a 1968 zoning plan opened the land to building. Pressed between the Palmetto Expressway and the edge of the Everglades, it now holds more than 23,000 people.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
