Brooklyn dammed the Mill River in the 1870s and flooded this valley to supply its own taps, part of a chain of Nassau County water properties the city bought up. After Brooklyn was absorbed into New York City in 1898 the need faded. Robert Moses ran the Southern State Parkway past the old reservoir in 1925 and turned the surplus waterworks land into a state park, which now holds the largest freshwater lake in the county.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
