Ashokan drowns twelve villages for New York's water

New York City condemned an Esopus valley, moved two thousand people, dug up and reinterred some 2,800 graves, and flooded twelve settlements to build a reservoir that still supplies about forty percent of the city's water. It arrives ninety miles south entirely by gravity, unfiltered, through tunnels bored under the river.
