Hall's Hill, the neighbourhood freed people bought from their former enslaver

After the Civil War the farmer Bazil Hall began selling off plots of his former plantation, and emancipated people from across the region bought them and built a community on the hill. By 1900 it was a small suburb of Washington strung along the Washington and Old Dominion trolley line. Through the Jim Crow decades it was one of Arlington's segregated Black neighbourhoods, walled off from the white streets next door. It is officially called High View Park, but almost nobody local uses that name.
