Boley and the all-Black towns
Boley, Oklahoma
CC0 · Wikimedia Commons
More than fifty all-Black towns were founded in Oklahoma, more than in the rest of the country combined, on the idea of a state where Black Americans could govern themselves. Booker T. Washington called Boley the most enterprising Negro town in the United States. Statehood in 1907 brought Jim Crow with it.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
