Lincolnville, founded by freed people in 1866

Freed people settled this peninsula southwest of the old Spanish city in 1866 and named it for Lincoln. By the 1920s Washington Street carried a full commercial strip of Black owned businesses and sixteen churches were active in the neighbourhood. Lincolnville supplied the organisers, meeting halls and housing for the 1964 campaign that helped break the Senate filibuster on the Civil Rights Act. The district was listed on the National Register in 1991 with 548 contributing buildings.
