Nicodemus, freed people wintering in dugouts
1877
Graham County, Kansas
Nationalparks · CC BY-SA 2.5 · Wikimedia Commons
Freed people from Kentucky came west on a promoter's promise and arrived to find open prairie and no town at all. They spent the first winter in dugouts. It is the only surviving Black settlement west of the Mississippi from the Reconstruction era, and descendants still return each July.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
